We’ve been lucky to spend a couple of Halloween’s in America during our travels, and I just love how they adorn their houses with seasonal decor and craft. It’s not just about the Halloween ghosts and ghouls, it’s the harvest festival aspect of Autumn/Fall which they include in their festive displays which I really enjoy. If you’re looking for some craft ideas to decorate your house for Halloween I hope you can get some inspiration from some of these autumnal ideas.
Wooden crate filled with autumnal items;
Recycle an old veg box or wooden crate and pad out with dried grass then fill with autumnal items like baby squash, long twigs, colourful leaves & fir cones, various sized church candles, dried whole corns and maybe some orange glitter sprayed berries to catch the light. Place on the doorstep for a welcoming feature to your home or make a smaller version for a table centre piece.
Simple DIY colourful Leaf garlands;
I’m not sure this could be more simple, but the effect is beautiful. Simply go out collecting the most colourful leaves you can find, a great activity for any toddler, and either hang from different length string or peg along a length of raffia to crate a free decoration for the house – hang in front of a window and watch the autumn sunlight stream through the bright colours.
Painted glass jar candle holders;
Simply clean various shaped glass jars and paint with orange glass paint, then paint on black silhouettes of your favourite Halloween images. I like to wrap twine around the top for a rustic feel, or you can use wire to create a hanging handle. insert a candle and light for an evening of flickering fun.
For a less haunted version taken from above, you could fill glass jars with black and orange craft or sprayed stones or jelly beans with an orange candle in each;
Non carve pumpkins;
If the thought of having to do all that digging and cutting out through thick-skinned pumpkins puts you off, or if you just want to go for something different, these embellished Halloween pumpkins might be just right for you, I love the cute button detail on these but your craft options are endless.
These would look fab inside or out on your front door. Stack up and off to the side or place over each windowpane of the door.
Children’s hand and foot prints;
How sweet are these Halloween style adapted images of your child’s hand and foot prints on canvas placed on the mantle. You can even make them into cards for the family, or frame and put on the front door in place of a pumpkin.
Everyone loves a paper chain or a garland right? Adaptable for any season, this fun “Halloween” message fireplace decoration can be changed to any word or saying you like. Backed pages of text (you can use an old book?) you can change the font of the letters to create your own individual look and mount on two lots of background colours for the style you like. Glue it all together along string and tie up along a mantle or door frame to showcase.
I hope these Halloween craft ideas bring you some inspiration, they are so simple but so effective, so many of them are free too…finding the time will be the hardest task!
