Living in Hampshire we’re very fortunate that there are lots of lovely places to visit and explore without having to travel too far; both as a family and as a couple. Last weekend we were lucky enough to whisk ourselves away for a belated anniversary weekend at the beautifully renovated Red Lion hotel in the picturesque village of Odiham, where we enjoyed a fabulous stay in one of their newly transformed bedrooms, as well as an absolutely delicious meal to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
It was a stunning Friday afternoon, unusually balmy for late October, as we took the short drive into historic Odiham. The sunshine was low and warm and my excitement levels were high! We don’t tend to have a babysitter for nights out just for us, usually they are for events such as weddings and parties, so I was feeling expectant about a night away just for us. As I strolled along the charming high street I fell in love with the quaint doorways and shopfronts leading up to the Red Lion.
Inside, the renovations were clear to see. The restaurant and bar area were contemporary yet they blended harmoniously with the original grade-listed features of the 500 year old building, it was full of rustic charm and I was looking forward to seeing more. As we walked through the back of the restaurant, up to the rooms I noticed that it was full of nice touches, inspired by the link to nearby RAF Odiham, which followed through to the bedrooms.
It was nice to get to our room early so we could take our time and enjoy our surroundings. The rooms were a great size to relax in and actually give myself more than 20 minutes to get ready!! My first impression when we got in the room was the smell – Oh my goodness the smell, it was divine!!! The ESPA reed diffusers filled the room and I felt like I was in a spa, and that to me is the ultimate relaxation. The bathroom was my absolute favourite part of our room and I enjoyed taking my time in the huge waterfall shower.
Once we were ready we wandered back down to what was now a buzzing and atmospheric bar, I loved seeing so many locals all gathering for their Friday night and sharing a drink or 2 at the laid back bar, or getting together for a meal in the restaurant, We were seated by the window and next to a lovely fireplace where we took our time looking through the well thought out and locally sourced menu. We’re, for the most part, more of a starters and main kinda couple than we are desserts, so we decided on the sharing boards to start, and they didn’t disappoint! They were incredible!
I really love how The Red Lion have such a passion for sourcing local food and using sustainable ingredients, and it all tasted so delicious. For mains Stuart chose the Surrey sirloin steak (standard for him!) and I went for the slow-cooked pork belly, all paired with a delicious wine. By the time we finished our feast we were both full to the brim and exhausted by the week gone by (kids!) so we took ourselves up to bed, through the fun and bustling bar, up to our room where we slept on what I can only describe as a cloud! I can’t even tell you how comfortable the duck down duvet and pillows were, it was heaven!
The next morning, after yet another delicious meal at breakfast, which was cooked to order while we enjoyed looking over more of the RAF themed gallery walls. Stuart popped back to get the children so we could enjoy a day out with them. I perused the many unique shops and antique collections along the high street until they arrived and we went off for a wander around 13th Century Odiham Castle, along the canal.
Sadly our visit was cut short due to the arrival of the back end of Hurricane Brian, so we decided to escape the weather by popping back into the Red Lion for lunch with the boys. Despite feeling like I could barely eat another morsel I managed once again to devour a delicious rump of lamb while the boys quietly enjoyed their colouring packs and munched on their fish and chips. I loved seeing how the buzzing Friday night trade blended seamlessly with a family friendly relaxed atmosphere which was once again full of guests enjoying time with friends and families.
We left our romantic weekend away with tummies full and hearts content having thoroughly enjoyed our retreat. There is so much to do in the local area and I would definitely recommend a stay at the Red Lion Odiham if you’re looking for an affordable yet luxury stay in Hampshire. Thanks so much to the team for making us feel so welcomed and giving us such a wonderful experience for our anniversary celebrations. I really hope we can come back for what looks to be a delicious Christmas menu to be enjoyed in such a festive setting.
