Pacific Coast Highway, The Ocean Road, Highway 1…whatever you want to call it this famous road is a must do if you’re driving in California. The scenery as you drive along drops down off of cliffs into the Pacific Ocean, cutting in the land to sweep around lush green hills before edging back over the sea.
The 500 mile famous road, beaten only by Route 66 in the fame stakes, goes from Dana Point (San Diego end) to the Redwoods National Park (way past San Fran) and you could easily spend 2 or 3 weeks driving along it stopping off in so many beautiful places such as Laguna Beach, Santa Barbara, Carmel, San Francisco, Fort Bragg…the list goes on and that’s not touching the surface!
You’ll see loads of cyclists along the road (rather them than me!!) and loads of motor bikes as this is one of the most desirable roads to drive along. Big Sur stretches 90 miles along this coast, with 2 state parks and loads of recreational activities and has probably the best scenery along the route. Mountains to the east and very rugged coastline to the west.
We stopped at Santa Cruz for lunch and a play in the sand, known for its vast amusements gallery, rollercoasters and boardwalk it makes for a nice stop between San Fran and Morro Bay.
