During the winter months, I love the idea of sitting by a fireplace with a hot cup of tea in one hand and a good book in the other. But with my young children running through my legs and asking for a drink/biscuit/wee every 30 seconds, this just is not quite possible! As much as I love cosying up inside, my children still need entertaining and with the weather getting colder and wetter it becomes increasingly difficult. Keeping them entertained takes some planning ahead. If you’re also looking for ways to entertain little ones during the winter here are some indoor activities for keeping children entertained when playing outside is not an option!
Indoor activities for keeping children entertained during the winter months.
Board games and puzzles
I will always remember game nights that my family would have, starting out as far back as I can remember. We would play Monopoly, Uno, and do all sorts of puzzles together. There are also so many other age-appropriate games nowadays that your kids can choose from and you can have stocked for when the weather takes a turn, the boys especially love puzzles and it turns out they are actually better at them than I am!
Whether it’s time to curl up on the couch to warm up and relax, or you need to focus on making some dinner but your kids aren’t staying entertained, putting on a children’s movie is a great option. There are many services that offer a vast selection of family-friendly content: for example, you can discover movies on uk.chili.com by flipping through the children’s section and select one for showing. We have a little tradition to put on a movie on a Sunday evening while the roast is cooking and snuggle up together, it’s so cute!
Crafts and art projects
Getting creative in the house can get messy but is absolutely worth it. If you want to avoid the streaks of colour across your walls and floors at the end of a colouring day, you can stick to other materials like paper plates, paint in sandwich bags (zipped up!) stickers, or crafting with fun beads and strings. You can make seasonal crafts or simply let your kids let their imagination and creativity run wild.
Play time indoors
Whether it is at your own home or at a play gym nearby, your kids have to get some energy out somehow! A play gym can be a great way for toddlers to run around, play with other kids and be ready for a nap afterwards. If you don’t have one nearby or the weather has you really stuck inside, any time where your kids are using their imagination and energy is a bonus. Building a fort, doing headstands, jump-roping, playing a made-up game, makeshift obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, and hop-scotch are some fun activities that they can do either alone or that you can join in on the fun with!
If the weather is not terrible, you can always bundle up and go out during the warmest hours of the day. That way you can all get some fresh air and the little ones can run around. Playing out in the rain and jumping in puddles with the proper rain gear can also be a fun family activity. Activities do have to shift during the winter months generally, but they can be just as fun!
