You may have seen some of my blogging and vlogging posts in the past, and more recently a vlogging essentials video talking all about the equipment I use to vlog and run my blog. To be honest there are so many parts to vlogging and my equipment has grown over time, but as it’s one of the most asked questions people ask me I thought it deserved its own video! I wanted to share some more in-depth info around one of my favourite gadget, the NETGEAR Orbi; I find it essential for vlogging and uploading content.
For me, one of the most frustrating things about vlogging is uploading content – this can take me hours, or I finally finish editing and my Wi-Fi drops out. It’s infuriating and not time effective whatsoever. Thankfully I have got my hands on an amazing gadget from NETGEAR which means I have the most powerful and fast network I’ve ever had allowing me to upload content and videos at lightning speed.
So what is mesh-networking when it’s at home, and why is it so good? I’ll take to good old Wikipedia to give you the tech explanation – “A mesh network is a network topology in which each node relays data for the network. All mesh nodes cooperate in the distribution of data in the network.” In basic terms, this means each unit placed around the house relays data to the router, giving a powerful and strong connection, wherever you are in the house. NO MORE DEAD ZONES!! Mesh-networking kits are a great alternative to traditional routers for large or troublesome homes where a single powerful router just isn’t good enough.
The Orbi system is extremely powerful, yet so simple to set up. The set up was absolutely fool proof; and that’s to say, I did it myself, in about 3 minutes! There’s an app for your phone which you can control devices on the network and check speeds etc. All I did was connect the Orbi base station router to my modem, then placed the satellite unit in another location in the house.
The secret to Orbi’s magic is a dedicated high-bandwidth Wi-Fi connection that’s used solely for the base station and satellite unit to talk to one another with your computers, smart phones, games consoles, tablets and other Wi-Fi devices using separate connections to communicate with the network. You simply place the 2 units at a distance from each other in the house and away you go!
Thank you to NETGEAR for helping me out with my Wi-Fi speed! #OrbiBetterWifiUk
